The number of guest nights in commercial accommodation edged lower in August compared to a year earlier, with New Zealanders a little less likely to stay and international visitors a little more likely.
Publishing the data today, Statistics New Zealand (SNZ) said the 2 million total guest nights in August was down less than 0.1 percent from a year earlier.
International guest nights were up 12,000 or 2 percent to 800,000, while domestic visitors accounted for 1.2m guest nights, down 1 percent or 13,000, SNZ said.
Hotels were the only accommodation type to record a rise in guest nights, gaining 57,000 or 7 percent, while motels were down 36,000 or 5 percent and holiday parks lost 14,000 or 6 percent.
The 42 percent of total guest nights spent in hotels during August, was the highest ever share of total guest nights recorded by hotels, SNZ said.
In recent years hotels had increasingly had the largest share of monthly total guest nights.
While nine regions had fewer guest nights in August than they did a year earlier, those declines were almost fully offset by only three increases.
The regions with more guest nights included Auckland, up 44,000 or 11 percent, Bay of Plenty up 10,000 or 6 percent, and Otago up 8000 or 2 percent.
The biggest losers were Taranaki/Manawatu-Wanganui down 17,000 or 12 percent, Waikato down 13,000 or 9 percent, and Wellington down 13,000 or 7 percent.
Auckland had the largest rises in both international and domestic guest nights, with a rise of 19,000 or 12 percent for international nights, and 25,000 or 11 percent for domestic.
Otago had the second largest rise in international nights, with a lift of 15,000 or 6 percent.
