Horticulture NZ is pushing for more information on the latest pest to breach the border – the hadda beetle.

In addition, HortNZ has requested a stakeholder advisory group be created to ensure communications between the horticulture industry and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry Biosecurity New Zealand were optimal as well as providing the means for growers to have input in key decisions.

While HortNZ has provided information about the pest to fruit and vegetable growers in the north of the country, details are needed as to the range of produce the beetle might target.

In a newsletter to growers this week, HortNZ said it was thought the pest preferred solanaceous crops, including potatoes, tomatoes, capsicums and eggplant, but confirmation was sought.

MAF Biosecurity New Zealand believed the beetle was contained to two parks near the Auckland port – Dove Myer Robinson Park and the Auckland Domain.

It was found to be feeding on dark nightshade, a weed in the solanaceous family.

The pest was discovered by an entomologist walking his dog in mid-January. MAF went public with its presence late last week.
