Sheep farmers look forward to $15m genetic boost

The government is due to invest $15 million over the next five years into sheep and beef genetics research.

With the lure of dairy conversion for sheep and beef farmers never stronger, the research is designed to further improve genetic gain and the development of new traits that can be farmed on hill country.

“Genetic improvement in the sheep industry has contributed greatly to farm profitability, and for every dollar captured on farm, another 50 cents is captured off-farm,” Science and Innovation Minister Steven Joyce said at the announcement of investment yesterday.
