Capital Letter: Taonga trumps pragmatism on MV Rena wreck future

New Zealand has become so accustomed to expediency and pragmatism in decision-making that last week’s interim report from the Waitangi Tribunal finding the Crown breached the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi in its response to the grounding of the MV Rena, may have surprised (as well as irritated) many.

It should however, serve as a shake-up not only of attitudes to vulnerable minority groups but also to how environmental calamities are managed (or avoided to begin with).
