Cunliffe’s Rena pledge would cost taxpayers millions: lawyer

A Labour-led government hell-bent on removing the wrecked container ship Rena will almost certainly have to step in financially, a lawyer says.

Yesterday, Labour leader David Cunliffe pledged that, if he is elected prime minister, the Rena’s owners will be forced to remove the ship – which ran aground on Astrolabe Reef, off the Bay of Plenty coast, on October 5, 2011, while travelling to Port of Tauranga.
