Economic fingers crossed over Tongariro

Economists are watching the volcanic activity at Mt Tongariro with more than passing interest, only too aware of the havoc volcanoes can wreak on the economy.

“Fingers crossed we don’t  have a Pinatubo or Taupo,” ASB chief economist Nick Tuffley, only half jokingly, tells NBR ONLINE.

“Mind you, if it goes off like Taupo did all those years ago then we won't have to bother about the economic impact – there’ll be nothing left.”
