LGNZ looking at alternative taxes

Local Government New Zealand has appointed a working group to review of local government funding.

But whatever proposals it comes up with will involve someone paying for more.

Examples of new funding tools include local income taxes, local consumption taxes, congestion charges, visitor charges and payroll taxes, according to LGNZ president Lawrence Yule.

He spoke about the different funding methods at the LGNZ conference last week in Rotorua.

New Zealand councils have a high reliance on property taxes, which is unusual by international standards, he says.
