Treasury: Who is advising the adviser?

The Treasury has been advising government on economic, financial and regulatory policy since 1840 but how good is its advice?

That is one of many crucial questions former director of fiscal Affairs at the International Monetary Fund Teresa Ter-Minassian is likely to answer in her independent external review into the quality of the department's fiscal policy advice over the past decade.

"It is almost 20 years since fiscal responsibility provisions were enacted into New Zealand law,” Treasury chief economist and deputy secretary Girol Karacaoglu says.
