Xenophobia over housing might hurt China trade: BNZ’s Alexander

Kiwi attitudes to Chinese buying houses might eventually have trade ramifications, BNZ chief economist Tony Alexander says.

Foreigners buying houses has hit the headlines this month as New Zealand First leader Winston Peters, with support from Labour leader David Cunliffe, promotes a potential ban on foreigners buying New Zealand property.

However, as reported in today’s National Business Review print edition, there are estimates Chinese buyers bought only 117 homes of the 7315 total of houses and apartments sold last month.
