EDITOR'S INSIGHT: Online shoppers' tax is worth resisting

In the area of dumb taxes, they don’t much worse than the proposal to impose GST or duty on the importation of items or shipments worth less than $400.

It no doubt comes from the same brains trust that suggested extending the fringe benefit tax to cell phones and car parks or the taxing of school-aged newspaper deliverers.

The FBT proposals were quickly scotched when business yelled loudly. Sadly, newspaper deliverers do not hold such power. Nor do consumers wanting to do a little online purchasing overseas.
