EDITOR'S INSIGHT: Rudd's return cuts Labor's losses
Australian Federal Labor MPs have reverted to Kevin Rudd as leader in an attempt to avoid an election wipeout on September 14.
In a 57-45 caucus vote, he defeated Julia Gillard and today will seek to be installed as prime minister.
But the minority government will need to retain support of the Greens and some independents. It will also be without six cabinet ministers loyal to Ms Gillard, who has signalled her retirement from politics and will not seek re-election.
The resigning ministers include deputy leader and Treasurer Wayne Swan.
