Editor's Insight: What's wrong with the universities?

The reaction to a further slide in the world rankings of New Zealand universities is predictable and indicates no improvement is likely.

Unlike the OECD’s PISA rankings of secondary schools, which brought a prompt response and desire for improvement, the tertiary sector appears complacent with its sinking reputation.
