International Art Centre
Fine Art Auction
December 2

Next week’s International Art Centre auction offers some good-value works with paintings and prints by Karl Maugham, Mervyn Williams, Judy Millar and Sir Peter Siddell among others.

There are four paintings of flowers on offer by Karl Maugham, two small ones and two larger.  The small ones are “Rudbeckia” and “Orange and Yellow Marigolds,” both expected to sell for between $3000 and $5000 with the larger works, “Yellow Iris’s” and “Red Poppies” going for $8000-1000.

There are four Peter Siddell paintings, which range from a small watercolour of Auckland’s  West Coast “The Watchman, Karekare” ($1500- 2500), through to one of his larger suburban Auckland views with “Trellis” ($35,000-45,000). There is also the small  “Stairs” ($4000-6000), a less typical interior work and “Black Glass” ($10,00-15,000) an urban architectural study.

The three Mervyn Williams painting on offer are excellent example of his ability to create deceptive illusionistic surfaces with Another Day ($2000-3000), Prescience’ ($3000-5000) and Orbital ($2500–3500)

Judy Millar is represented by three prints in her Flip series. These framed works are expected to sell for $700-1000 and would be a bargain at these prices as the same unframed prints are available through her dealers for $1250.

Also providing something of a bargain are three Ralph Hotere prints from his Anzac series ($200-300)  and a series of lithographs by Shane Cotton of 1997  ($1000-1500), which have been selling for twice those estimates.

There are a couple of McIntyre’s on offer with a Raymond McIntyre of 1913 of a “Street in Sainte Valery ($35,000-45,000) and a Peter McIntyre of The Whakapapa River ($18,000-26,000)
