Y&R managing director James Hurman will leave the ad agency, senior ad agency sources say.

It is understood staff at the agency were told today that Mr Hurman is departing for a new business venture.

Under Mr Hurman’s leadership, the agency gained clients such as Esquires, Westfield, The Co-operative Bank, EQC and The Interislander.

The highly awarded strategist and author of The Case for Creativity had been in the top job at Y&R since August 2012.

He had returned to New Zealand for the job at Y&R after a brief stint for Ogilvy Shanghai and  before that he had been planning director for Colenso BBDO, which he joined in 2007.

Last year global ad ranking report the Big Won ranked him the No 1 planning director in the world.

Mr Hurman and Y&R executive creative director Josh Moore were not immediately available for comment.
