Scores of judges are in fun capital Rotorua for a secret natter about how many legal beans make three.

Officially, it’s a behind-closed-doors triennial conference for inferior district court judges.

But to make it more fun, just about every other judge from the higher courts, including environment, employment and Maori land courts, have been roped in for good measure.

Courts were shut down this week, with only a handful of short-straw-drawing judicial skeletons left holding the fort.

Judge’s spin doctor Neil Billington happily reminded NBR ONLINE judges' conferences are not open to the media or the public ,and he is not able to say what Their Honours talk about.

But it has already been leaked that a hot topic is the development of a range of penalties for those who fail to show due respect by getting judges’ titles and names wrong.

If you know what the judges are talking, about email janderson@nbr.co.nz - in confidence if necessary.
