Kiwibank account up for pitch

Kiwibank is the last of the banks to go to pitch in recent years, but finally a chunk of the business has come loose.

Just don’t get too excited – it’s the direct marketing section, not the main creative section, which remains safely with Ogilvy.

The bank is calling for RFPs from direct marketing agencies and the deadline is this Friday.

It's one of the top 200 spenders in the country, with an estimated spend of $11.5 million, most of which is TV (Nielsen, December 2009).

Clemenger Group direct marketing agency Total Direct last had the Kiwibank DM, having picked it up without a pitch in 2007.

NBR records show the Wellington-based agency took it from Frank, who took it from Redrocks.

Back then it had also been handled in-house for a brief period.

Kiwibank is after a DM agency to work “closely” with its partners Ogilvy (creative), mail house (Datamail/Kinetic 121) and print broker (Converga).

The bank wants “excellent strategic and creative services that will help Kiwibank develop deeper relationships with customers, build the brand, and stand-out [sic] in the market.”

Predictably, it’s after a Wellington-based agency, which narrows the scope somewhat, and one with a "full-time" service team available five days a week, Monday to Friday.

Now that does smell funny.

It’s also after “cost-effective services”.

Included in the DM section is strategy, creative, online, account management, campaign review and cost-effectiveness demonstration.
