NBR’s Nathan Smith, Duncan Bridgeman, Chelsea Armitage, Nick Grant, Deborah LaHatte and Jason Walls discuss some of the week’s most thought-provoking stories.

The first topic on the agenda this week was the Westpac v Nicky Hager privacy issue.

In a story that dominated headlines on most publications this week – including NBR's – Westpac handed over Nicky Hager’s bank records to the police at their request.

“I think [the situation is] downright outrageous,” comments one Rumbler.

“The police say to Westpac, ‘tell us everything you have on Nicky Hager’ and the bank says ‘yes sir’, absolutely. I’m quite scared about that.”

Another Rumbler agreed, citing a Rob Hosking column published this week which suggested New Zealand citizens are becoming too complacent, rolling over when an authority figure gives the word without giving any thought to the justification.

Although Westpac did change its mind and amended its policy on providing information, there are still many businesses which would give up information without questions, a Rumbler suggests.

But the saga opened up many more questions about who owns the data: is it the banks, or the people who hold the account?

In NBR’s print edition this week, the AECT election was in focus.

The AECT is the Auckland Energy Consumer Trust, for those who did not know – and one Rumbler says most Aucklanders don’t – and there is currently an election running.

But what is the point in the AECT and which political parties are behind which ticket? Tune in to find out.

Finally, the Wellington City Council has decided it is sticking to its guns on the living wage. This is a move which could cost it more than $2 million.

“This is outrageous,” another Rumbler comments again.

The financial implications are too vast and there is the potential for legal action.
