Nearly a third of industrial and trade sector businesses in a survey of energy use have reported it is impossible to making further energy savings, Statistics New Zealand (SNZ) says.
A third of the respondents said they had no energy saving initiatives in place, while 57 percent said they monitored energy use or cost.
A quarter of the businesses saw transport as providing the greatest opportunity for energy saving, while 13 percent saw opportunities for savings in electronics, appliances or lighting, with 10 percent considering that space heating provided opportunities.
The survey results published today are for the 2009 financial year and cover the manufacturing, electricity, gas, water and waste services, construction, retail trade, wholesale trade, and transport industries.
They are part of a three-year cycle to show energy use across the entire economy. For the 2008 financial year primary industries were covered, while for 2010 the survey will look at the service industries.
The industries covered in the 2009 survey used 358,000 terajoules of energy, almost two-thirds of this country's total estimated energy use for the same period, SNZ said.
A terajoule (TJ) of energy was roughly equivalent to filling a 40-litre petrol tank 700 times, or the total electricity used by 35 households in one year.
Manufacturing used 191,000TJ of energy, 53 percent of the total energy use in the industrial and trade sectors, while the transport industry used 107,000TJ.
