EPA announces board appointments

The Environmental Protection Authority has a wide remit, from hazardous substances and new organisms, marine activity and emissions.

Wed, 28 Aug 2019

Mary-Anne Macleod has been appointed to the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) Board. Dr Nicki Crauford has also been reappointed.

The EPA Board is responsible for the EPA’s governance. The EPA regulates and makes decisions on hazardous substances and new organisms, as well as specified marine activities in New Zealand’s Exclusive Economic Zone. It also provides administrative support for the decision-making on major infrastructure and certain projects under the Resource Management Act, and it operates the New Zealand Emissions Trading Register under the Emissions Trading Scheme.

Macleod is currently a director at the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) and was the chief executive of Bay of Plenty Regional Council and, earlier, a senior leader at the Ministry for the Environment. She has a broad governance and executive management background with experience in the private sector, local and central government, environmental regulation, financial management and science.

Macleod’s appointment was confirmed after the departures of long-serving EPA Board members Gillian Wratt, whose term ended in June, and Tim Lusk who stepped down in August 2018. Both have served on the EPA Board since its inception in 2011.

Nicki Crauford

Crauford has been on the EPA Board since 2013 and is a professional company director with extensive governance and senior management experience, combined with a background in infrastructure and engineering. She is currently chair of GNS Science and a director at Watercare Services and Orion New Zealand. She is a former director of Genesis Energy, Wellington Water and deputy chair of Fire and Emergency New Zealand. Crauford is a chartered professional engineer, a Fellow of the Institution of Professional Engineers in New Zealand and the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and a Chartered Fellow of the Institute of Directors. Her management experience includes roles in the oil and gas and electricity sectors.
