Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Whai Rawa, the commercial arm of Auckland hapū Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, has recently appointed Tui-kay Cole as its new tourism coordinator.

With a background in tourism, Cole combines international experience working for Emirates with her ingrained local knowledge of the Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei whenua and people.

Cole is a member of the hapū and joins Whai Rawa from the tribal development arm of the hapū, Whai Maia, where she was the education adviser.

She has also worked with Maria Ayshford (Ngāti Awa) on their joint business Taonga by TM, a Te Reo Māori learning resource platform offering creative Māori design and personalised bilingual prints.

Cole joins the team headed by Whai Rawa General Manager of Tourism, Annie Dundas, who joined the company in May bringing with her over 23 years’ experience in the tourism industry.

The first project for the pair has been the revamp of Tāmaki Hīkoi, guided walking tours through Tāmaki Makaurau covering the history of the people of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei and their intrinsic connection to their land and water.

Dundas says Cole’s appointment will bring invaluable insights into the cultural experiences the team hope to offer.

“Tui-kay is the perfect fit to help drive the new look of Tāmaki Hīkoi, delivering the same authentic experience for manuhiri.

“I’m looking forward to working with her to grow the tourism offering with a unique take on tourist experiences that stay true to the guiding principles of the hapū,” Dundas said.
