New Hillary Outdoors GM makes history

Hillary Campbell is the youngest person and only the second woman to hold the leadership role.

Tue, 22 Sep 2020

New Zealand’s leading outdoor education provider Hillary Outdoors has appointed a new general manager. Hillary Campbell is, at 39 years old, the youngest person and only the second woman to hold the leadership role in the organisation’s 47-year history. She has taken on the role after helping to coordinate the organisation’s recovery from the wide-reaching impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Over the last few months, Hillary’s youth sector experience, combined with her business acumen, has been pivotal in helping Hillary Outdoors work through the consequences of Covid-19,” Mark Copeland, Hillary Outdoors board chair said. “During the national lockdown, our outdoor centres had to completely close their doors. We lost 100% of our business overnight. At one point we thought we might not be able to survive. It has been a pretty challenging time for all of us,” he said.

Campbell said: “Our founders Sir Graeme Dingle and Sir Edmund Hillary had a clear vision for this organisation – to give more young people the opportunity to experience the life-changing benefits of outdoor education. Annually around 8000 students participate in Hillary Outdoors programmes.”

As part of the recovery plan, Hillary Outdoors has moved its Auckland Support Centre to South Auckland’s Momentum Hub in the Vector Wero Whitewater Park. The Hub is a cluster of youth and active recreation-focused non-profit organisations that collaborate and share resources. Space is provided rent-free through the support of Second Nature Charitable Trust and the Joyce Fisher Charitable Trust.

Campbell has been with Hillary Outdoors for more than two years, sourcing funding and support for the organisation in her role as director of partnerships. She has a strong background in business operations and partnership marketing, including positions with the FIFA Women’s World Cup and as the general manager of Staging Connections New Zealand & Fiji. She has a recreation management and business degree from Acadia University. She lives in South Auckland.
