EDITOR'S INSIGHT: Ford's exit and the billion-dollar gravy train

The Australian car industry hasn’t been paying its way for the past three decades so its inevitable demise will also end a costly drain on taxpayers.

The full cost of this period will be close to $A20 billion, since the subsidies started to prop up the industry in the 1980s.

Some $A12 billion has been paid out to keep manufacturing operations and jobs over the past 20 years and the latest industry plan adopted in 2005 is budgeted at $A5.4 billion up to 2020.
