Jasmax principal Richard Harris has had a transformational role in architecture in New Zealand. Recognising his contribution and influence, the NZ Institute of Architects (NZIA) has appointed him a distinguished fellow. One of only four to hold this title.
Mr Harris has led architectural teams on some of New Zealand’s biggest and well-known projects. Including the restorations of Auckland’s Civic Theatre and Town Hall, and Eden Park’s 2010 redevelopment. His 20-year partnership with AUT and their city centre campus masterplan has resulted in many changes that we’ve seen in city central developments Including the internationally-acclaimed AUT Sir Paul Reeves building.
Committed to challenging the city for reforms, Mr Harris has held influential roles on the Construction Strategy Group (deputy chairman) and Committee for Auckland (director). In particular, his role chairing the government taskforce championed the utilisation of Urban Development Authorities (UDAs), a recommendation which today has strongly come into play.
Passionate about transforming the architectural profession, 30 years ago he co-initiated ‘Vision 2007,’ An independent project that called for reforms to how New Zealand educated architects and practised architecture. The project also called for reform to the then structure of both the NZIA and the architects’ regulatory registration board (NZRAB). Unwittingly this launched him into sequential governance roles with both organisations.
A principal (director) of NZ-based architecture firm Jasmax since 1989, Richard has played a large part in creating and growing one of the country’s largest and longest established full-service design firms. The firm is responsible for many recognisable developments across the country, including Auckland City Hospital, Sylvia Park and Christchurch's Burwood Hospital.
An influential leader in creative and professional services in New Zealand, the title of distinguished fellow is a credit to Mr Harris' continued and tireless efforts to improve the quality of life of the average New Zealander. He says, “My passion for creating buildings and places has been indulged by wonderful clients and enriched by talented collaborators, consultants and contractors, many of whom have become good friends. Thank you all.”
