UPDATE 8.15pm: Telecom's standard update adds nothing to its 6.15pm bulletin, bar that no mobile should be used for emergency calls.

Customers from Taupo south are still experiencing what Telecom calls "significant interruptions to voice calls" with "SMS and data services affected to a lesser extent".

The fresh wave of XT grief began at 4pm today.

An email from Chris Quin, head of Telecom's Gen-i Australasia services division, sent to major corporate customers tonight - and forwarded by one of them to NBR - elaborates: "All sites south of Taupo have been impacted. This issue was escalated to Telecom Executive and Alcatel-Lucent Global Support immediately."

Read Mr Quin's full email - complete with its Austin-esque opening line - at the end of this article.

UPDATE 6.15pm: A Telecom media update, issued at 6.15pm, says "significant interruption" is being experienced by XT users Taupo southward.

Notably, it also name-checks Alcatel-Lucent, ending: "Telecom and network partner Alcatel-Lucent are taking immediate steps to restore service, and will give updates as the situation develops."

Somebody call the Top Gear team - it's happening again. Big time.

For the past hour or so XT customers in central Christchurch and Wellington have been complaining on Twitter and online forums like Geekzone about lack of mobile service.

Telecom's XT network suffered major outages in December and late January.

A fresh wave of trouble last week was blamed on an upgrade designed to make the network more robust, which went awry, taking down multiple cellsites.

Telecom has yet to comment on the cause of the latest failure.

RAW DATA: Gen-i's latest customer update

Subject: Latest XT Mobile Network Update - 22 February 2010

Dear [snip],

I am incredibly disappointed and sorry to have to tell you there has been an issue this afternoon on the XT network covering only the area south of Taupo.

From late this afternoon we saw the degradation of service on the Christchurch XT RNC, with a significant impact to voice and some degradation of SMS (text) and data services in this area.

All sites south of Taupo have been impacted. This issue was escalated to Telecom Executive and Alcatel-Lucent Global Support immediately.

Root cause investigations are underway and we will be in touch with you as soon as we have relevant new information. We can confirm this was not a result of planned change work and the emergency services platforms have not been affected, but some XT mobile devices will not be able to make 111 emergency voice calls.

We appreciate this additional event will give you further cause for concern. We have absolutely all focus and resource on this we can, if there is anything that you need us to do immediately to support your business, please contact me or your Gen-i client manager.

Once again, I apologise and deeply regret any inconvenience or problems you may be experiencing due to this new interruption of the XT service.
