The Emerson Brewing Company was named the Supreme Award Winner at the 2010 Westpac Otago Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards last Friday evening.
Inspired by varieties of beer available overseas, Richard Emerson founded the Dunedin company in 1992, with help from family and friends.
“Building on my food science studies and brewing jobs overseas, I set about experimenting on a small scale,” said Mr Emerson.
The business now has nine full time staff and several part-timers.
“We are a small but enthusiastic team and as well as the core range the brewcrew enjoy the smaller and more experimental brews, which make craft brewing so much fun.“
The company’s beer range includes 11 flavours for every palate, featuring Brewer's Reserve, which changes regularly and only available on tap at selected bars and from the brewery shop.
Emerson’s beers are produced using local and imported malt, predominantly American and New Zealand hops, yeast and water. It contains no sugar, artificial colours or preservatives.
The brewer also pocketed the top award in the Manufacturing/Primary category.
Youthline Otago, Classic Jaguar Limousines and R & R Sport are amongst winners in different categories; Jono Bredin and John Gilks bagged individual awards for Future Business Leader and for Business Personality, respectively.
