Vodafone and Telecom resolve network outages


UPDATED: Both Telecom and Vodafone experience network outages that affected mobile data and fixed line broadband customers but these have now been resolved.

UPDATED:  Vodafone's network problems were resolved last night, head of corporate communications Sarah Newcombe said.

Both Vodafone and Telecom experienced network outages today, which affected mobile and broadband customers and have now been resolved.

Telecom said in a statement that a technical issue, which was still being investigated, may have caused connectivity issues for some customers using mobile data and SMS, and some residential broadband services.

The statement said mobile data and text, and some residential broadband services were intermittently affected from about 12.30pm today, with XT voice working normally. Service was restored progressively from 1.30pm, the statement said, and any customers still experiencing issues should try restarting handsets or modems.

Telecom spokeswoman Katherine Murphy said the company could not give customer numbers because the outage was intermittent, but service had now been completely restored.

The statement said the issues had been caused by a technical issue that was being investigated. 

"The network remains under close monitoring.”

Vodafone head of corporate communications Sarah Newcombe said at around lunchtime the company experienced technical problems affecting customers trying to access websites hosted offshore. 

Initially the problem affected fixed line broadband customers but spread to mobile customers, she said, however customers could make calls and texts during this time.

Ms Newcombe said the problem was resolved for fixed line customers, but there were still some intermittent issues for customers browsing on their mobile devices.

A statement from Vodafone said their engineers were working on resolving the problem with the highest priority and that in the meantime, affected customers would receive an error message saying page could not be displayed, or similar.

Ms Newcombe said the problem arose with one piece of equipment and was not weather related.

It was hard to say how many customers were affected, since mobile data issues meant it would affect whoever was attempting to access the internet at that time, she said.
