This weekend was not a good one for Wellington-based climate change zealots.

A bitterly cold but wet Saturday saw our capital only a few degrees warmer than London and with fires being re-lit and mulled wine prepared, it did not auger well for Prince William’s visit to officially open that marvel of Government procurement, our own $81 million but 24% over budget, Supreme Palace of Justice.

Forgetting the golden rule of event management is to always get your talent into the same city the night before, more than a few officials at Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Justice, must have been in a cold sweat.

Saturday gave way to an equally dismal Sunday that had Wellingtonians awaking to thick fog on Monday. Those officials should not have worried.

In a big sock in the eye of the republican movement, our future King’s spectacular arrival into Wellington saw the fog dissipate and the emergence of a mysterious glowing golden orb, which locals had forgotten the name of.

The rest of New Zealand calls it the sun.

Locals have now christened this ‘Prince William weather’ and it’s understood a cabal of relieved cabinet ministers, tourism officials, councillors and residents, maybe in discussions to make this arrangement, a long-standing one.
