Details of the new Whanau Ora system for welfare and social services delivery will be revealed today by Prime Minister John Key and the minister in charge of it, Maori Party co-leader Tariana Turia.

They have called a press conference for 11am when they will take the wraps off Whanua Ora, including the amount of money that will be allocated to it in the May 20 budget.

It is a new way to help families in strife -- the name means well family -- by bringing together agencies which now work separately so they can deal comprehensively with the different problems family members face.

It is expected that welfare agencies will work with housing, the police and health services through a system co-ordinated by community organisations.

Labour has been complaining for months that it has been unable to debate Whanau Ora properly because details have been withheld, and questions have been met with "wait for the budget" answers.

Whanau Ora has been developed on a Maori model but any family will be able to access its services.
