2014 Oscars: Winners and losers

The 86th annual Academy Awards are under way in Hollywood. The results have thrown up few surprises among our picks, with Gravity and 12 Years a Slave sharing most of the honours. The winners will be added to the following list first published by NBR ONLINE.

BEST PICTURE
• Winner: 12 Years a Slave
What will win: 12 Years a Slave
Experts' pick: Gravity
Better picks: The Wolf of Wall Street and Nebraska

BEST ACTRESS
• Winner: Cate Blanchett. No one lost money on this one.
Everyone’s pick: Cate Blanchett in Blue Jasmine

BEST ACTOR
• Winner: Matthew McConaughey adds an Oscar to that of his co-star, Jared Leto, and pips favourite Leonard DiCaprio.
Who will win: Leonard DiCaprio for The Wolf of Wall Street
Experts’ pick: Matthew McConaughey in Dallas Buyers Club

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
• Winner: Lupita Nyong’o upset some predictions (including ours) but not the experts with her debut film appearance, heading off last year's Oscar winner.
Who will win: Jennifer Laurence in American Hustle
Experts’ pick: Lupita Nyong’o in 12 Years a Slave
Best pick: June Squibb in Nebraska

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
• Winner: Jared Leto. He was the overwhelming favourite for his role as a transgender AIDS patient.
Everyone’s pick: Jared Leto in Dallas Buyers Club

BEST DIRECTOR
• Winner: Alfonso Curon, as expected. Gravity has also picked up most of the technical awards.
Everyone’s pick: Alfonso Curon for Gravity

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
• Winner: Spike Jonze for Her. One of the few surprises.
What will win: American Hustle
Best pick: Nebraska

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
• John Ridley for 12 Years a Slave
What will win: 12 Years a Slave
Best pick: Philomena

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
• Winner: The Great Beauty (La grande bellezza), Italy. Director Paolo Sorrentino follows in the footsteps of Fellini and Antonioni
What will win: The Great Beauty (La grande bellezza), Italy
Outside bets: The Broken Circle Breakdown – Belgium; The Hunt (Jagten) – Denmark

BEST DOCUMENTARY
• Winner: 20 Feet From Stardom. It was no contest between a behind-the-scenes showbiz doco and Indonesian death squads.
What will win: 20 Feet From Stardom
