The Mayor of the new Auckland super city will be paid a salary of $240,000 a year.
And if the job goes to Auckland City Mayor John Banks, he’s in for a pay rise of almost $80,000.
Mr Banks is the country’s highest paid mayor, with an annual salary of $160, 567.
The Remuneration Authority today released details of the pay packets for those elected to the new Auckland Council.
Councillors will earn a base salary of $80,000 and local board members will earn a base rate that varies according to their region – a minimum of $20,100 in Great Barrier and a maximum of $37,100 in Howick.
Councillors and local board members can earn extra money if they take on additional responsibilities in the council.
Auckland City Council councillors currently earn just under $49, 000 annually and almost $80,000 if they chair one of the council’s largest committees.
Local Government Minister Rodney Hide said knowing what they stood to earn would help prospective candidates firm up their intentions for the October elections.
Nominations open for one month from July 23.
Mr Hide said the Remuneration Authority had found the right balance between recognising the responsibilities of each position, and a fair cost to ratepayers.
Across the eight councils currently governing the Auckland region there are 261 elected representatives, including community board members, who earn a combined salary of $9.3 million.
The new Auckland Council will reduce the number of elected representatives to 170, with a total remuneration of $8 million – saving ratepayers $1.3 million.
