2degrees has confirmed that its chief operating officer, Bill McCabe, is departing for the UK. He flies out May 24.
Staff were told the news today.
Mr McCabe will continue to do work for the company from the UK as a consultant, spokesman Michael Bouliane said.
"After three years, it's time to take a young family home where they can be with friends and their wider family."
Mr McCabe joined 2degrees in May 2008 as chief commercial officer, taking on the role of sparring with regulatory authorities that had previously been the domain of company founder Tex Edwards.
The Leeds University graduate's previous role was head of roaming at Hutchison 3G in Ireland.
One of Mr McCabe's key issues, mobile termination rates, was concluded this week as the Commerce Commission announced regulated pricing for interconnection between carriers.
A second major issue – a spat over on-net plans such as Vodafone's Best Mates - remains unresolved.
McCabe would like visit New Zealand "from time to time," Mr Bouliane said.
