2degrees, once pre-pay only, continues to move up the food chain, opening post-paid contract-friendly shops. The company's latest retail store, which has just opened on Wellington’s Lambton Quay, is its 14th.

The company told NBR it plans to open more than 30 by the end of the year (a finesse on March, when it said 40).

Of the 14 now open, six are owned and run by the company, and eight by independents.

Telecom said it had 105 outlets. 34 are company owned; 30 run by franchisees under the Telecom Business Hubs brand (following a recent restructure) and 41 are independently owned.

Vodafone told NBR it had 85 stores. 76 are company-owned (including the First Mobile chain bought by the company last year), 43 owned and run by Digital Mobile, nine run by independents, and six by Driving Sound Wireless.

All three carriers also sell through multiple third-party retailers. A recent commercial spat saw Vodafone dumped from Dick Smith. The chain's 77 stores now only carry Telecom and 2degrees product.
