The Government's annual accounts, to be released on Thursday, will confirm the fiscal situation remains tight, Prime Minister John Key said today.

The financial statements will cover the year to June 30.

"They will confirm that the Government's fiscal situation remains tight and that the Government has helped to buffer the economy from the worst effects of the recession by absorbing some of the shocks on its books," Mr Key said at his post-cabinet press conference.

"As we said in the budget, we expect to run a $13 billion cash deficit in the current year and will be working hard to get back into budget surplus over the coming years."
