Acting spy boss named
Steps in for Lt Gen Sir Jerry Mateparae, who has been appointed Governor-General.
Simon Murdoch has been appointed acting chief executive and director of the Government Communications Security Bureau intelligence agency.
Mr Murdoch has previously been the chief executive and secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
He has also served as New Zealand High Commissioner to Australia (1999-2002); and chief executive of the New Zealand Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet (1991-98).
He has undertaken diplomatic postings in Washington and Canberra, and served as director of the Australia Division of MFAT (1987-89). He was foreign policy adviser to the Prime Minister from 1979 to 1982.
In 2010 he undertook a review of the intelligence agencies and, from November 2010 to February 2011, was the acting chief executive and director of the GCSB before the appointment of Lt Gen Sir Jerry Mateparae.
Mr Murdoch has been appointed because of the vacancy created by Sir Jerry’s departure to become the next Governor-General. Mr Murdoch takes up the role on July 1.
