Christchurch electronics design company Aiotec has acquired Bluewater, a specialist in printed circuit boards with pre-loaded computer applications.

The acquisition will double the size of Aiotec’s staff numbers to 22 staff and contractors. The company was set up in 2002 by husband and wife team, Shayne and Jeanne Crimp, to provide electronic engineering services to Australasian export manufacturers. It was recognised in this year’s Deloitte Asia Pacific Technology Fast 500 for its rapid growth.

With the aim of achieving turnover of more than $10 million over the next five years, the acquisition allows Aiotec to provide more services with a combination of embedded systems (pre-loaded applications) for ARM and non‐ARM microprocessors (used to power various digital products such as global positioning systems and Apple i-Pads).

Before the acquisition, Aiotec gleaned about 65% of its income from consultancy sales, with the balance from product sales to the telecommunications sector.

The company has recently released two products for the telecommunications industry to help facilitate the rollout of fibre optic broadband. With assistance from TechNZ funding and the University of Canterbury, Aiotec is developing a new electronic platform for industrial noise control due for completion in mid 2011.

Bluewater Systems was founded in 1996 by ARM specialist, Simon Glass, who said it was time to pass on the business.

He will continue working in the ARM electronics areas in the UK and US while retaining ties to New Zealand through his ARM‐based product company DesignA Electronics.
