Air New Zealand reduced its capacity on Tasman and Pacific routes by 12.9 percent in December compared with a year ago, reflecting downsizing to smaller aircraft, reduced flight frequencies and the withdrawal of trans-Tasman flights from Hamilton and Dunedin.
This resulted in the load factor, or percentage of occupied seats on an aircraft, increasing by 6.6 percentage points to 81.6 percent.
Overall, the airline carried 1.2 million passengers in December, down 2.6 percent on the same month last year. Demand was down 5.6 percent and capacity was reduced by 11 percent, increasing the group load factor by 4.8 percentage points.
Short haul passenger numbers were 2 percent lower than December last year and long haul were 6.4 percent lower.
The load factor on domestic routes rose by 5 points to 79.3 percent as capacity reduced by 5.4 percent.
The load factor on Asia, Japan and UK routes was 85.4 percent and on North America and UK routes it was 89.8 percent.
