Air New Zealand's operating statistics rose in June from a year earlier, but most figures for the financial year are still down.
The airline today said it carried 1 million passengers last month, and while that was lower than the 1.11m passengers recorded in June 2009, it was up 7.8 percent when adjusted for the number of days in the June accounting period this year and last year.
Revenue passenger kilometres (RPK) -- the number of revenue passengers carried multiplied by the distance flown -- rose an adjusted 5.8 percent last month from a year earlier.
Available seat kilometres (ASK) -- the number of seats available multiplied by the distance flown -- were up an adjusted 1.7 percent, while the passenger load factor -- which measures passenger numbers against seat numbers -- improved 3.2 percentage points to 82.7 percent.
For the financial year the number of passengers carried was down 0.4 percent to 12.32m, with RPKs down 4.7 percent and ASKs down 8 percent.
Air New Zealand said group-wide yields for the financial year were down 7.1 percent on the same period last year. Yield is a measure of revenue, adjusted for currency movements, over distance flown on a per passenger basis.
On domestic routes the number of passengers carried rose an adjusted 10.2 percent in June and were up 2.6 percent for the year to 8.02m. RPKs were up an adjusted 10.6 percent for the month and 4.1 percent for the year.
On Tasman and Pacific routes passenger numbers were up an adjusted 2.5 percent in June but down 4.5 percent for the year to 2.66m. RPKs rose an adjusted 2.2 percent for the month, while falling 4.5 percent for the year.
Long haul routes recorded an adjusted 4.8 percent rise in passenger numbers for the month, with a 6.9 percent fall for the year to 1.65m. RPKs lifted an adjusted 6.3 percent for June, while for the year they were down 6.8 percent.
Short haul yields for the financial year were down 5.4 percent, and long haul yields down 10.7 percent.
