Packaging manufacturer Amcor is spending A$33m (NZ$43m) on a new can line at its South Auckland plant to meet increased demand in this country.

The investment would also free up capacity in Australia given that cans were now being shipped across the Tasman to this country, the Australian-based company said in its half yearly report.

The investment is going ahead even as the company described economic conditions in this country as remaining particularly difficult, saying that as a result volumes in all its Australasian businesses were lower than the same period last year, with the exception of the beverage can business.

The new line is needed to meet the increasing demand of New Zealand beverage producers, the company said.
