Mr Key left New Zealand on a Defence Force 757 Thursday. After a brief stopover in Darwin, Australia those onboard the flight were told the weather radar was malfunctioning.
The 757 was almost turned back but the pilots soldiered on with only a few bumpy moments for passengers.
Spare parts needed to fix the radar were not immediately available so the second 757 was flown up from Darwin and will carry Mr Key to Hanoi tonight where he will attend the East Asia Summit.
