Aorangi Hospital and the Southern Cross Hospital in Palmerston North are again seeking to merge in an application to the Commerce Commission.
The two privately-owned hospital operators have applied jointly to the commission for authorisation to merge their respective Palmerston North private hospitals. The application has been made under a streamlined authorisation process.
The Southern Cross hospital has two operating theatres and 26 in-patient beds and provides specialist consulting and elective surgical services to both day patients and inpatients. Aorangi has four operating theatres and 32 in-patient beds and also provides specialist consulting and elective surgical services to both day patients and inpatients.
The commission declined a merger proposal from the two hospital in 2008 on the basis that it was not satisfied that the acquisition would not lead to a substantial lessening of competition in the markets for the provision of short-stay and in-patient hospital facilities and related services in the Mid-Central District Health Board region.
