The Investment Savings and Insurance Association has appointed green business warrior Peter Neilson as its new chief executive.

He fills the shoes of Vance Arkinstall, who resigned facing criminal charges midway through last year.

Mr Neilson was previously the chief executive of the New Zealand Business Council for Sustainable Development – leading its advocacy for pricing carbon, waste levies and sustainable procurement by government agencies.

He is an economist and has worked as an international consultant with Ernst & Young and the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research.

He joins the ISI on May 1.

The ISI is the industry body representing investment and life insurance companies, with members controlling savings worth about $50 billion.

ISI chairman Sean Carroll said Mr Neilson’s appointment would see the ISI increase its focus on issues such as retirement income and savings and the level of under-insurance within New Zealand.

Mr Arkinstall ended his ten-year stint as ISI chief executive in July after the Securities Commission laid criminal and civil charges against him and the other directors of the failed Dominion Finance Group.
