The latest Art + Object fine art auction featured some of New Zealand's best artists, with spirited bidding setting several records and combined sales topping $2 million.

After last year's hugely successful auction of the Paris Collection, some feared that there might be little money left for more big auctions. But they were wrong and high prices were paid for major artists from last century as well as newer artists.

There were half a dozen Gordon Walters works offered, including one of his iconic koru works, Tautahi, which had excellent provenance, having come from the Beaglehole collection. It sold for $439,685 (against a reserve of $400,000-$600,000), a record for the artist's work at auction.

Colin McCahon continues to attract good prices, with a range of his work selling successfully. One of his Necessary Protection works, a small (457x610) polymer on paper from 1971 sold for $47,485 (well over the estimate of $30,000-$40,000), Rosegarden III from 1975 went for $ $140,700 ($120,000-$160,000) and one of his Noughts and Crosses paintings of 1976 went for $281,400 ($230,000-$300,000).

Pat Hanly’s Golden Age sold for $41,035 – well over the estimate of $28,000-$38,000 – while a number of other works from the 1970s and 80s did well including, Milan Mrkusich’s Painting Red, 1976, for $87,935 ($65,000-$85,000), Tony Fomison’s Ko te Kingitanga $146,560 ($120,000-$160,000) and Michael Illingworth’s Land, Land and Island $100,510 ($100,000-$150,000).

More recent works which sold well included John Pule's The Place Where I've Not Been $52,760 ($45,000-$65,000), Gavin Hipkins' The Homely for $21,100 ($15,000-$20,000) and Andrew McLeod's Kowhaiwhai Sun for $43,380 ($40,000-$55,000), which set a record price for his work at auction.
