Auckland-based Atlantis Healthcare is expanding its European operations, with new offices opening in Frankfurt and Madrid this month.

The company provides support programmes that help people with chronic illnesses adhere to their pharmaceutical drug prescriptions.

Atlantis chief executive Michael Whittaker said the expansion into Spain and Germany reflected the two countries’ importance to the global pharmaceutical industry and the potential demand for Atlantis’s support programmes.

“Germany is Europe’s number one pharmaceutical market, and number three in the world, while Spain is Europe’s fifth largest, and the seventh largest in the world.”

The move into Germany will mean a hands-on role for company chairman Walter Stahl, who is moving to Frankfurt to oversee the establishment of the new office there.

Mr Whittaker said at the announcement today that it would take about a year for the company to recover its set-up costs in these new markets.

He said Atlantis now has between 150 and 160 staff but has “only ever employed two to three people with adherence experience.”

Other regions of interest to the company are the Middle East, Latin America, Canada and the USA.

Atlantis runs more than 50 programmes in seven countries, used by more than 300,000 patients worldwide.
