Former Auckland City councillor Dame Barbara Goodman has died aged 80.
Dame Barbara was the niece of long-time mayor Sir Dove-Myer Robinson and served as his "mayoress". She was instrumental in the campaign to have a statue of "Robbie" buit in Aotea Square.
She was elected to the Auckland City Council in 1988 after the death of her husband, former Auckland City deputy mayor Harold Goodman.
Operating under the Citizens and Ratepayers banner, she spent 12 years on the council.
Dame Barbara was also known for her support of liberal causes such as gay rights. In 1985 she started the group HUG, or Heterosexuals Unafraid of Gays.
For 10 years she was chairwoman of Odyssey House Auckland, which operates programmes for adolescents, parents and other adults experiencing difficulties with substance abuse, gambling, and other associated problems.
Auckland mayor Len Brown has expressed his sadness on the passing of Dame Barbara.
Dame Barbara’s legacy will last "long beyond her death", he says.
"She was a great Aucklander who paid a significant role in the civic life of this city and played an pivotal role in a variety of community causes.
“She was respected by everyone, independent and feisty, and committed to the causes she supported.”
