French hotel group Accor has bought the Mirvac Group’s 43 hotels in Australia and New Zealand.
In Auckland, it will bring the Quay West and Sebel hotels into the group, which owns the Pullman, Novotel and Mercure brands, among others.
The deal for an undisclosed sum will take Accor’s network in Australia and New Zealand to some 240 hotels representing 32,000 rooms. It will also make Accor the largest hotel owner and operator in the Asia Pacific region with more than 500 establishments.
While most of the Mirvac hotels will continue under their existing names, it is proposed they will eventually be changed over to the Accor brands.
In Sydney, it means the Mirvac-managed Marriott Hotel has been re-branded overnight as Pullman Sydney Hyde Park while the Sebel Newcastle Beach will become the Novotel Newcastle Beach in June.
Accor Asia Pacific chief operating officer Michael Issenberg says the deal will add significantly to the competitiveness of the Mirvac hotels.
“The benefits will come from access to our global distribution platform, strong branding, our pre-eminent position in the rapidly expanding Asian markets,” he says.
