Australian cricket team doctor Peter Brukner has announced the death of Phil Hughes who died in a Sydney hospital, two days after being hit by a bouncer.
Australia captain Michael Clarke has been at Phil Hughes' bedside, along with family and close friends.
Mr Hughes never regained consciousness following his injury on Tuesday, Dr Brukner said.
The 25-year-old underwent surgery to relieve pressure on his brain but never regained consciousness.
Cricket Australia had offered counselling to players who witnessed the incident, including Sean Abbott, the paceman who bowled the bouncer that struck Mr Hughes.
NZ's Parliament broke from its normal business to mark the cricketer's death.
