Australia’s rate of unemployment was 5.2% in November, down from 5.4% in October and 5.6% in November 2009, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said.
The bureau said the economy had added a total of 54,600 full time positions in November, which was well in excess of market expectations.
Economists said the robust nature of the data suggested the Reserve Bank of Australia, which on Tuesday left its official rate unchanged at 4.75%, might soon resume its tightening trend, perhaps has early as February.
The participation rate - the proportion of the population looking for work or already employed - rose to a fresh monthly record of 66.1% from 65.9% in October and 65.4% in November 2009, the bureau said.
