New Zealand banknotes are being upgraded – but New Zealanders won’t see much of a change.
The Reserve Bank today announced plans to upgrade the quality of the current series of banknotes, from the $5 through to the $100 note.
But Reserve Bank Governor Alan Bollard said the “five respected individuals” currently featured on New Zealand banknotes would not be changing – though their “look” would be modernised.
These individuals include explorer-philanthropist Sir Edmund Hilary (featured on the $5 note), suffragette Kate Sheppard ($10) and Maori politician Sir Apirana Ngata ($50).
A recent Nielsen survey found the public was satisfied with the colours, design, range and themes of the existing notes.
Reserve Bank Governor Alan Bollard said the upgrade would ensure the banknotes benefited from the technical advances that had been introduced in banknote security over the last 12 years.
Dr Bollard emphasised that planning for the upgrade project is at an early stage and the various new banknotes will be progressively released from 2014 at the earliest.
