Forget NZIER doom and gloom estimates of business confidence - restaurateur Luke Dallow’s champagne meter is riding high.

According to Mr Dallow, who owns popular Auckland establishments Sale St and Chapel Bar & Bistro, champagne sales are up from an average 10 bottles a week last year to 35 bottles – “always a good sign that the economy is on the rise."

“And it’s corporates coming back and doing that,” he added, with clients once again being taken out on the company account.

Mr Dallow expected a “false ceiling” boost for the hospitality industry during the Rugby World Cup, “with a small dip on the other side, but it’ll come back up after a couple of months.”

“I’m looking forward to year end 2011 – so looking forward to it that I’m investing money into another bar.”

More economic recovery predictions from top business leaders will be available in this Friday's print edition of NBR.
