As manufacturers and call centres continue to make the most of cheap offshore labour, a small group of Taranaki oil riggers has struck a blow in the opposite direction – successfully negotiating for the workers to be paid Australian wages.
When asked for his thoughts yesterday, Prime Minister John Key advised New Zealand employees to exercise caution if offered overseas wages in overseas currencies.
“If you get someone prepared to pay you nominally the same amount in Australian dollars, pounds, maybe Euros, go for it ... some currencies you might want to exchange faster than others.”
